Contamination is the most common cause of hydraulic and lubrication failure, and the least visible. Oil that looks clean can carry enough particulate to be steadily destroying the components it is meant to protect.
1. Wear you cannot see
The particles that do the most damage are the ones smaller than the clearances they pass through. They abrade bearing surfaces, score cylinder bores and erode valve lands gradually, so performance degrades long before anything fails outright.
2. Most contamination is introduced, not generated
New oil straight from the drum is frequently dirtier than the specification a system needs. Add contamination introduced through:
- Top-ups from open containers
- Breathers that are missing or saturated
- Dirty fittings and fill points
- Shared transfer equipment
Tip: Filter new oil before it goes in. Assuming it is clean because it is new is the most common and most expensive mistake.
3. Change on condition where you can
Fixed-interval changes are simple but blunt. Oil analysis tells you what the fluid and the machine are actually doing, which often means safely extending intervals on some assets while catching a developing problem on others.
4. Filtration is a system, not a part
Correct micron rating, adequate capacity, sound bypass behaviour and a realistic change interval work together.
Tip: A filter that is bypassing provides no protection at all — and nothing on the machine will tell you.

Fluid cleanliness is one of the cheapest reliability levers available, and one of the most consistently overlooked.
